Akron Waterways Renewed Program: Middlebury Sewer Separation | Green Project

Project Overview

Ribway was part of the Consultant Team tasked with providing professional engineering services for the sewer separation of combined sewers in the Middlebury Project Area of Akron, Ohio. This project, a critical component of Akron’s Advanced Facilities Plan Update under the Consent Decree, aimed to eliminate overflows from Racks 5 and 7 Sewershed tributary to the Little Cuyahoga River by October 2017.

Key Responsibilities

Design Phase:

  • Reviewed 19,000 linear feet of sewer segments, including CCTV video analysis of over 120 sewer segments, ranging from 8″ to over 54″ in diameter and constructed from materials such as reinforced concrete, PVC, vitrified clay, and segmental block.
  • Conducted field investigations and reviewed existing records to assess conditions and rehabilitation needs.
  • Prepared a design report summarizing recommendations, construction costs, and required repairs, including CIPP lining, slip lining, pipe replacement, and point repairs.
  • Created detailed construction drawings for repairs and rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation Recommendations:

  • Recommended CIPP lining and point repairs for 4,000 linear feet across 28 segmental block sewer segments.
  • Evaluated structural integrity using NASSCO PACP guidelines, factoring in failure risks based on sewer location (e.g., under structures or arterial streets) and position within the sewershed.

Challenges

  • Coordinated with parallel infrastructure projects under tight deadlines.
  • Worked within a condensed schedule using a Construction Manager at Risk approach with a Guaranteed Maximum Price based on 60% of the plans.

Timeline

  • Design Completion: April 2016
  • Construction Completion: 2017

Project Highlights

  • Comprehensive Analysis: Assessed over 120 sewer segments, considering structural and environmental impacts.
  • Efficient Design: Delivered practical and cost-effective rehabilitation strategies under tight deadlines.
  • Sustainability Focus: Helped eliminate sewer overflows, improving environmental outcomes for the Little Cuyahoga River.
