Woodward Avenue Sanitary Sewer Improvements
Project Overview
Ribway provided professional design and planning services for the construction of 1,400 linear feet of 8″ diameter sanitary sewers to serve 15 existing homes in an un-sewered residential area along Woodward Avenue, northeast of downtown Columbus.
Key Responsibilities
Design and Coordination:
- Evaluated alternative alignments and confirmed design flows.
- Conducted geotechnical investigations and prepared detailed construction plans.
- Coordinated with a concurrent stormwater improvement project on the same street.
- Held public meetings with residents to determine optimal service tap locations, minimizing lateral connection lengths.
Challenges Addressed:
- Limited Alignment Options: The sanitary sewer alignment was constrained by a new 42″ to 48″ storm sewer installed 5 feet below the proposed sewer along the roadway centerline. The final alignment was placed along the north side of the pavement to avoid conflicts.
- Easement Acquisition: Temporary construction easements were secured from homeowners for equipment access.
- Bid Coordination: Sanitary sewer bid documents were integrated with stormwater project plans to manage overlapping tasks such as pavement replacement and traffic maintenance.
Construction Approach:
- Sewer installation to be completed using open-cut methods at a maximum depth of 12 feet.
Timeline
- Design Completion: 2016
- Construction Completion: 2017
Project Highlights
- Integrated Planning: Ensured seamless coordination between sanitary sewer and stormwater improvement projects.
- Resident-Focused Design: Minimized homeowner costs with strategic service tap placements.
- Efficient Execution: Delivered practical, cost-effective solutions within tight spatial and logistical constraints.
