Project Overview

The Salem Avenue (SR 49) Phase 1 project involved the widening and reconstruction of a one-mile stretch of State Route 49, including a 4-lane superelevated roadway and a 3-span reinforced concrete continuous slab bridge (MOT-49-0548). The project aimed to enhance roadway safety, improve traffic flow, and rehabilitate the bridge structure.

Scope of Work

Roadway Rehabilitation

  • Widening and reconstruction of SR 49.
  • Curb and gutter replacements to improve drainage.
  • Installation of new sidewalks for pedestrian safety.
  • Median improvements: Replaced the existing median with grass, shrubs, and trees for enhanced aesthetics.
  • Safety upgrades:
    • Installation of new guardrails.
    • Shoulder widening.
  • Stormwater drainage improvements:
    • Replaced roadside ditches and obstructions with an enclosed stormwater conveyance system.
    • Installed 12″, 15″, 18″, and 21″ pipes.
  • Traffic signal improvements:
    • Relocated traffic loops.
    • Revised signal timing for better traffic management.

Bridge Rehabilitation (MOT-49-0548)

  • Deck widening to accommodate roadway improvements.
  • Wearing surface replacement with micro-silica overlay for durability and longevity.

Additional Design Services

  • Utility research and coordination to minimize conflicts during construction.
  • Erosion control (SW3P) plan to manage stormwater runoff.
  • 3-phase Maintenance-of-Traffic (MOT) plan featuring:
    • Part-width construction to maintain traffic flow.
    • Night-time operations to minimize disruptions.
  • Coordination with the City of Trotwood and ODOT District 7 to ensure project alignment with local and state transportation goals.
  • Design compliance with ODOT Highway and Bridge Design Standards.

Project Completion & Results

  • On time and within budget.
  • Critical activities were monitored and tracked using project scheduling software.
  • Design completion: March 2005.
  • Construction completion: September 2005.
