Chatterton & Fontaine and Reynard Roads Improvements

Design completion: November 2015
Construction completion: July 2016
Client: Franklin County Engineer

Ribway was selected as a Prime Consultant by Franklin County Engineer’s Office to provide engineering services for this roadway widening project.

The safety improvement project included:

  • The addition of a center turn lane on Chatterton Road between Reynard Road and Fontaine Road
  • Improvements to the Chatterton Road and Fontaine Road intersection
  • Improvements to the Chatterton Road and Reynard Road intersection

Chatterton Road was widened for approximately 600 feet from the intersection with Reynard Road to 400 feet west of Fontaine Road to accommodate construction of the turn lane.

The project also included:

  • Major geometric improvements to both intersections
  • Pavement resurfacing
  • New concrete walks
  • New curb and gutter
  • A 10ft wide raised pedestrian refugee island (concrete median)
  • ADA curb ramps
  • An extension of a 10-ft wide shared-use path (SUP)
  • Rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) signals
  • Pedestrian pushbuttons and crosswalks

The geometric improvements included:

  • New turning radii to accommodate WB-40 design vehicles
  • Regrading to improve drainage
  • New sidewalks designed to minimize removal/relocation of roadside obstacles and utilities such as fire hydrants, fencing, utility poles, etc.
  • Pavement markings and striping to reassign the lanes and provide safe passageways for bicyclists and pedestrian users through the intersections

Storm water drainage improvements consisted of:

  • Ditch regrading
  • New catch basins and about 70 feet of storm sewers ranging in size from 12” to 18” in diameter
  • Half-height retaining stone walls were built on both sides of Chatterton Road near Fontaine Road to stabilize high earth fills at the back of the sidewalks

Ribway developed an elaborate 4-phase MOT plan to maintain traffic, balancing the objectives of timely construction and minimizing traffic disruption.  Design was performed to Franklin County Standards and coordinated with the City of Columbus, Central Ohio Transit Authority, and nearby commercial businesses
