Jackson Pike WWTP Berliner Park Pretreatment Decommissioning & Harmon Avenue Pretreatment Improvements
Construction completion: July 2011
Client: City of Columbus
Project Overview
Ribway was selected as part of the Design Team responsible for providing engineering services for decommissioning of existing structures at the Berliner Park Pretreatment Facility and construction of a new Grit Pad Facility at the Harmon Avenue Pretreatment Facility.
In the first phase, Ribway performed design services and prepared detailed plans and specifications for demolition of several structures at the Berliner Pretreatment Facility. The structures included:
- Three-story 12,000 sf raw sewage pump station/administration building with brick superstructure
- One-story 7,500 sf maintenance garage
- One-story 2,000 sf cement storage facility
- Three-story 3,000 sf storm water pump station
- 5,000 sf concrete grit pad
- Several small miscellaneous structures
A hazardous materials inspection and survey was completed for the structures prior to demolition. Hazardous materials were present in pipe insulation, window caulking and roof tiles and had to be removed or encapsulated prior to decommissioning of the structures. Some of the structures were demolished to approximately 4 ft below grade. Others were completely removed. The entire site was regraded and seeded following demolition of the structures. Additional fill material was brought on site to establish the final grade. Other miscellaneous improvements included:
- Water line
- Storm sewer and power line relocations
Decommissioning of the Berliner Site was completed in June 2011. Ribway also provided construction administration services.
Work at the Berliner Site also included rerouting the existing 108-inch diameter OSIS concrete interceptor sewer by constructing two large cast-in-place underground diversion chambers and installing approximately 500 feet of new 102” diameter FRP pipe between the chambers. The underground chambers, with access shafts, are approximately 50-foot wide by 35-foot long. The 108-inch interceptor is the main feed to the Jackson Pike WWTP. The costs for bypass pumping the flow in the 108-inch interceptor were prohibitive, so the diversion chambers were designed to be constructed under live flow conditions.
In the second phase, Ribway provided electrical and instrumentation & control design and construction administration services for the construction of a new 600 sf vehicle storage building, new site and entrance lighting, site security cameras and electrical operated 30-foot wide double leaf swing gate. The storage building was located near the new grit pad.
