Naghten Street Stormwater & Roadway Improvements

Project Overview
The City of Columbus, Ohio selected Ribway as the prime consultant to provide professional engineering services related to the separation of the storm and sanitary sewer system, and rehabilitation of a major roadway in this heavily congested downtown area. The City embarked on this project to reduce infiltration and inflow into the sanitary sewer system and reconstruct the aging roadway. The Project was divided into 2 parts; Part 1 included the rehabilitation of two (2) large combined brick sewers which were deteriorating and in need of significant repair while Part 2 included the drainage and roadway improvements.
The storm drainage improvements in Part 2 included:
- Over 50 curb inlets and catch basins
- Approximately 2,300 lf of 54 and 60-inch storm sewer in Naghten Street, Cleveland Avenue and Grant Avenue
- Over 1,000 lf of 12 to 15-inch storm laterals
The roadway improvements included:
- Partial and full depth pavement replacement for approximately a ½ mile section of Naghten Street and Grant Avenue
- New sidewalks, curbs and gutters
- Residential and commercial driveway replacements
- Numerous utility and service relocations
- New ADA compliant accessibility curb ramps
Ribway’s scope of services for Part 2 included:
- Field survey
- Geotechnical investigations
- Hydrologic and hydraulic analyses
- Preparation of a design report
- Detailed Contract Documents (plans and specifications)
- Engineering services during construction
Plans for pedestrian pathway provision and maintenance; signage and striping; erosion control; and traffic maintenance utilizing part width construction and road closures with detours were included in the Contract Documents.
Challenges on the project included:
- Major utility relocations
- <aintenance of traffic issues
- Containing all the improvements within the existing narrow right-of-way
- Acquisition of easements
Contract Documents for Part 2 were completed in June 2009.
