Chatterton & Fontaine and Reynard Roads Improvements

Project Overview

Ribway was selected as the Prime Consultant by the Franklin County Engineer’s Office to provide engineering services for the Chatterton Road widening and safety improvement project. This project aimed to enhance traffic flow, improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety, and upgrade stormwater management along Chatterton Road between Reynard Road and Fontaine Road.

The project included:

  • Adding a center turn lane on Chatterton Road between Reynard Road and Fontaine Road.
  • Widening Chatterton Road for approximately 600 feet from the intersection with Reynard Road to 400 feet west of Fontaine Road.
  • Major intersection upgrades at Chatterton & Reynard Road and Chatterton & Fontaine Road.

Scope of Work

Roadway & Intersection Improvements

  • Addition of a center turn lane to improve traffic flow and safety.
  • Major geometric modifications to both intersections, including:
    • New turning radii to accommodate WB-40 design vehicles.
    • Regrading for improved drainage.
  • Pavement resurfacing for a smoother and more durable roadway surface.

Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Enhancements

  • New concrete sidewalks, curb, and gutter for improved walkability.
  • 10-ft wide raised pedestrian refuge island (concrete median) for enhanced pedestrian safety.
  • Extension of a 10-ft wide shared-use path (SUP) to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians.
  • ADA-compliant curb ramps at all pedestrian crossings.
  • Installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) signals with pedestrian pushbuttons and crosswalks.
  • Lane reassignments & pavement markings to enhance bicyclist safety through the intersections.

Stormwater Drainage & Structural Upgrades

  • Stormwater improvements included:
    • Ditch regrading to improve water flow.
    • New catch basins and approximately 70 feet of storm sewer (12” to 18” in diameter).
  • Half-height retaining stone walls were constructed on both sides of Chatterton Road near Fontaine Road to stabilize high earth fills behind sidewalks.

Traffic Control & Project Coordination

  • Development of a 4-phase Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plan:
    • Balanced timely construction with minimized traffic disruption.
  • Coordination with multiple stakeholders, including:
    • City of Columbus
    • Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA)
    • Nearby commercial businesses
