Jackson Pike WWTP Berliner Park Pretreatment Decommissioning & Harmon Avenue Pretreatment Improvements
Overview
Ribway was selected as part of the design team responsible for providing engineering services for the decommissioning of existing structures at the Berliner Park Pretreatment Facility and the construction of a new Grit Pad Facility at the Harmon Avenue Pretreatment Facility.
Scope of Work
In the first phase of the project, Ribway performed design services and prepared detailed plans and specifications for the demolition of several structures, including:
- A three-story, 12,000-square-foot raw sewage pump station/administration building with a brick superstructure.
- A one-story, 7,500-square-foot maintenance garage.
- A one-story, 2,000-square-foot cement storage facility.
- A three-story, 3,000-square-foot stormwater pump station.
- A 5,000-square-foot concrete grit pad.
- Several small miscellaneous structures.
Hazardous Materials Mitigation
A hazardous materials inspection and survey were completed for the structures prior to demolition. Hazardous materials identified in pipe insulation, window caulking, and roof tiles were removed or encapsulated before decommissioning. Additional fill material was brought to the site to establish the final grade.
Miscellaneous Improvements
Other improvements included the relocation of water lines, storm sewers, and power lines. Ribway also provided construction administration services to ensure quality and compliance with specifications.
OSIS Interceptor Sewer Rerouting
Work at the Berliner Site also involved rerouting the existing 108-inch diameter OSIS concrete interceptor sewer. This included:
- Constructing two large cast-in-place underground diversion chambers.
- Installing approximately 500 feet of new 102-inch diameter FRP pipe between the chambers.
- Designing the underground chambers (approximately 50 feet wide by 35 feet long) with access shafts.
The 108-inch interceptor is the main feed to the Jackson Pike WWTP. Due to prohibitive costs for bypass pumping, the diversion chambers were designed to be constructed under live flow conditions.
Timeline
Decommissioning of the Berliner Site was completed in June 2011.
Harmon Avenue Pretreatment Facility Improvements
Scope of Work
In the second phase of the project, Ribway provided:
- Electrical and Instrumentation & Control Design
- Construction Administration Services
Key Improvements
- Construction of a new 600-square-foot vehicle storage building near the new grit pad.
- Installation of new site and entrance lighting.
- Deployment of site security cameras.
- Installation of an electrically operated 30-foot-wide double-leaf swing gate.
Timeline
Construction at the Harmon Facility was completed in July 2011.
Results
The decommissioning and improvement efforts:
- Enhanced operational efficiency by upgrading critical facilities.
- Successfully mitigated hazardous materials.
- Minimized disruption to live sewer operations during construction.
- Provided improved security and infrastructure at the Harmon Avenue Pretreatment Facility.
