White Road & McDowell Road Improvements
Project Overview
Ribway was selected by the Franklin County Engineer’s Office to provide design engineering and engineering services during construction for improvements at the critical urban White Road & McDowell Road intersection. This project aimed to reduce vehicular accidents and alleviate pedestrian safety concerns.
The project was coordinated among:
- City of Grove City
- Jefferson Township
- City of Columbus
- Franklin County Engineer’s Office
Scope of Work
Roadway & Intersection Improvements
- Widening of 3,000 feet of White Road on both sides of the intersection of McDowell Road.
- Expansion from 2-lane to 3-lane, adding:
- Dedicated left-turn lanes.
- Center turn lanes to improve traffic flow.
- Geometric enhancements:
- Radii return revisions for better turning movements.
- Horizontal and vertical alignment adjustments.
- Vertical profile improvements to enhance drainage and mitigate yard flooding.
Infrastructure & Drainage Upgrades
- Full-depth, full-width pavement replacement with striping.
- Drainage system replacement:
- Converted an open drainage system to a closed storm sewer system.
- Installed 12″, 15″, 18″, and 21″ storm sewer piping.
- Water main upgrades:
- Relocated an existing 8-inch water main.
- Extended a 12-inch water main.
Pedestrian & Safety Enhancements
- New sidewalks, pedestrian crosswalks, curbs, and gutters to improve walkability.
- Residential and commercial driveway improvements.
- ADA-compliant accessibility curb ramps.
- Designated school crossings for improved student safety.
- New mast-arm street lighting with detectors on all approaches.
Additional Services Provided
- Erosion Control (SW3P) Plan.
- Maintenance-of-Traffic & Detour Signing Plan
- Soils Investigations
- Environmental Permitting for:
- Water main extensions.
- Reconnection of discharge lines from private septic system leach fields.
Project Completion & Results
- Design completion: June 2009.
- Construction completion: September 2009 with minimal changes.
