Project Overview

Ribway provided engineering design services for the City of Trotwood, Ohio involving the rehabilitation of a 132-foot, two-span concrete box beam bridge located on Sycamore Woods Boulevard in Trotwood, Ohio, The Sycamore Woods Boulevard Bridge. The project addressed structural deficiencies while enhancing durability. Traffic on Sycamore Woods Boulevard was detoured to facilitate construction.

Project Scope

  • Deck Removal: Removal of the existing deck, old concrete box beams, and guardrail.
  • Structural Refurbishment: Refurbishment of the existing abutments and center pier.
  • New Installation: Placement of new concrete box beams, waterproofing, new pavement surfacing, and pavement striping, and installation of a new guardrail.
  • Expansion Joint System: Installation of a special polymer modified asphalt expansion joint system at both ends of the bridge.
  • Erosion Control: Restoration of the embankment with dumped rock and concrete placed on the banks for erosion control.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provided constructability reviews to identify cost-saving opportunities in construction.
  • Delivered construction management and inspection services, including:
    • Coordinating construction progress meetings.
    • Monitoring construction for compliance with plans and specifications.
    • Managing materials testing services.
    • Reviewing shop drawings.
    • Maintaining project documentation (e.g., Project Bill of Materials and Change Orders).
    • Reviewing and approving pay applications.
    • Overseeing project close-out activities.

Timeline

  • Construction completion: Spring 2011, within the 45-day allotted schedule

  • The project was constructed within budget and partially funded by the Ohio Works Commission (OPWC).
